SometimesIthink about the time I got into John Irving.

Most of his books are about
Writers
New England / Maine
and transgender people.

With having a more outspoken LGBTQ+ community now,and John Irving being at the peak in the 80s,I have to wonder what it's like for trans-people to pick up his books this day and age.

Is he a great ally?
Or do people nowadays generally resent his portrayal?

I remember in the late 2000s one of the books had a moment where the main character is married to a trans woman and he takes her to a drag performance in Europe. It talked about about the sensitiveties and issues when a transgender individual is confronted with that performative aspect. Essentially, the trans person was uncomfortable,but there was some consolidation with the actors in the play (also trans) after the show.

I've never read anything by John Irving so I wouldn't be able to comment but I have seen bits and pieces of that movie, not the whole thing. I remember seeing part of it and that character in particular, or rather the fact that character existed, was one of a number of things that led me to figure out I wasn't alone in the world. Beyond that, I've never seen the full film or any other John Irving book or film adaptation

I guess I actually should read some of those books now that I know that.

Well

I did start work on a game (just a quick 10-15 minute RPGMaker thing) at the tail end of last year that I need to get back on. And I have stories in mind for two more that are in various stages of thought-out.

And I wrote my first TTRPG Campaign.

so I did definitely flex my writing muscles a LITTLE more last year than usual, which I suppose is good considering I do wanna tell stories. I am jsut absolutely dogshit garbage at believing they will be any good at all and sticking with the work, which then makes me feel further terrible.

But there were moments in my TTRPG sessions as Game Master where I realized I must have hit the nail on the head in SOME respects - because in one of the first quests and sessions, I managed to build up an antagonist that was scary enough that my players noped out of their first chance to encounter him, and in the second I managed to put the person behind all the misery they were going through totally above suspician until they found the correct clues.

That part did feel good.

I recently finished reading what I believe is one of the best nonfiction works explaining the histories of Israel and Palestine both, with it being something that far more people should look into.

It particularly speaks to me as somebody of Jewish ancestry, because it's difficult but important to accept the history of immoral actions taken by certain Jewish groups and also taken by others against them. Bloodshed with innocent victims piling up on multiple sides. It's remarkably honest as a book.

It's funny to be reading Night Watch at a year like this.

It's a time of civil unrest, with corrupt leadership, a lot of corruption within the ordinance services and civilians getting arrested and disappearing forever.
